The 4 P’s of Organizing Anything

PLAN…PURGE…PURCHASE AND PUT BACK

The first thing you need is a PLAN.  Without a plan there is no guide to what you have to accomplish.  Organizing flows smoothly if you plan out any project.  Separate the project into smaller steps, then check off as you go.

The PURGE is one of the most difficult steps.  It is the step that most people avoid, yet without it nothing changes for the better.  Most of us do not plan or purge but they purchase and attempt to put everything back.  Get rid of items that you don’t need, don’t love or are in bad condition. For example, that orange lamp that your mother-in-law gave you ten years ago but you have never liked, toss it or donate it.

After you have purged, it is the perfect time to PURCHASE.  First, look around your house or office. You can sometimes find items that you can re-use in your space.  Many organizing items can be found at The Container Store and Bed, Bath and Beyond; however, you can also find containers and other supplies at Target or Wal-Mart.  Buy simple supplies that work in your space. You do not have to spend a ridiculous amount of money to organize yourself.

The last step is to PUT BACK the items you are keeping.  Here is where all your hard work will pay off.  Freeing yourself of stuff you no longer need and enjoying your space will put a smile on your face.
